About Samantabhadra Bodhisattva
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, also known as the Bodhisattva of Universal Virtue, is one of the most important bodhisattvas in Buddhism. His Sanskrit name is Samantabhadra, and he is also called the Bodhisattva of Universal Benevolence and the King of Vows. He is one of the Four Great Bodhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism and serves as the right attendant to Shakyamuni Buddha, together with Manjushri Bodhisattva. Along with Vairocana Buddha and Manjushri Bodhisattva, they are collectively known as the "Three Saints of Huayan." In Buddhist doctrine, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva emphasizes the importance of taking action and practicing, and is thus regarded as the "practical school" of Buddhism. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva represents the implementation of virtues, filial piety, compassion, and wisdom. If these cannot be applied to daily life and interactions with others, they become meaningless and mere talk. Therefore, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva teaches us the importance of practice and implementation.
Legend
According to the Sutra of Compassionate Grace, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva was originally the eighth prince, Mintu, during Amitabha Buddha's reign as a wheel-turning king. He received a prophecy from the Buddha of Treasures after vowing to practice the bodhisattva path and was renamed Samantabhadra. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva encourages people to widely practice the Ten Great Vows, including paying homage to all Buddhas, praising the Tathagatas, making extensive offerings, repenting karmic obstacles, rejoicing in others' merits and virtues, requesting the turning of the Dharma wheel, requesting the Buddha to remain in the world, always following the Buddha's teachings, constantly benefiting sentient beings, and dedicating all merits.
