About Zaji Lhamo
Zaji Lhamo, also known as the "Goddess of Good Fortune," is a revered deity in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, specifically worshipped in the Zaji Temple, a subsidiary temple of the Sera Monastery. She is regarded as a female wealth deity and a Dharma protector, holding an important position in Tibetan culture. She is widely seen as a symbol of good fortune and protection, embodying the profound wishes for abundant wealth, good health, increased courage, and unwavering determination.
Legend
There are various accounts of Zaji Lhamo's origin. One popular story is that she was originally a beautiful and kind-hearted woman from Han China who was poisoned and died in a well due to court intrigue. Her soul lingered and was later enlightened by a senior monk from Sera Monastery who brought her to Lhasa. Since she could not enter Sera Monastery, she was left in Zaji, where the monk built a temple, sculpted her statue, and performed a demon-subduing ritual. She was thus named "Zaji Lhamo" (meaning "Goddess of Good Fortune" in Tibetan).
