About Six-Armed Mahakala

The Six-Armed Mahakala, also known as the Six-Armed Black Deity, is the wrathful manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. He is one of the most important and widely recognized Dharmapalas (Dharma protectors) in Tibetan Buddhism. With his majestic presence, he protects sentient beings from harm. He is not only capable of safeguarding homes and driving away evil spirits but also of bestowing blessings for a peaceful and prosperous life, removing obstacles, and enhancing favorable conditions and wealth. The Six-Armed Mahakala is revered as a symbol of career success, using his boundless power to help devotees achieve their goals and aspirations, guiding them through difficulties with unwavering determination and ensuring enduring fortune.

Legend

In Buddhism, he is regarded as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara and one of the principal Dharma protectors. According to legend, he once rescued a merchant who had been bitten by a venomous snake, applying medicinal herbs to the wound and restoring the merchant's health. Another famous story involves him performing a ritual for a deceased merchant when a ferocious tiger suddenly appeared and dragged away the merchant's corpse. Enraged, the Six-Armed Mahakala pursued the tiger and tore it into pieces. This tale exemplifies his wrath and bravery, elevating his status in Buddhist faith.

Main Features of Six-Armed Mahakala’s Image

  • Appearance: He has six arms and a blue or black complexion. He wears a crown of five skulls, symbolizing the conquest of the five poisons (greed, anger, ignorance, pride, and doubt). His three eyes represent the ability to see the past, present, and future.
  • Right Upper Hand: Holds a bloodied curved knife, symbolizing the severing of afflictions and demons.
  • Left Upper Hand: Holds a skull cup, representing wisdom and emptiness.
  • Central Hands: The central hands are clasped in front of the chest, holding a vajra and a bell, signifying the union of wisdom and skillful means.
  • Other Hands: The remaining hands hold a lasso and an elephant skin, with the lasso symbolizing the binding of afflictions and the elephant skin representing fearlessness and the overcoming of obstacles.
