About Namo Guangji Dragon King Bodhisattva

Namo Guangji Dragon King Bodhisattva, also known as the Fifth Dragon Prince, is a revered wealth deity in Buddhist tradition. He is the fifth son of the Dragon King, named Shengyan. Known for his responsiveness to prayers for wealth, he is often referred to as the "Fifth Dragon Prince Wealth Deity." Widely worshipped in temples, he is seen as a dragon deity representing water, wealth, and happiness. In Chinese culture, gold symbolizes wealth and power, while the dragon represents strength and majesty. Thus, the Fifth Dragon Prince Thangka is commonly regarded as a symbol for invoking wealth and happiness.

Legend

According to the Buddhist scriptures of the South Sea Buddhist Affinity, Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, made twelve great vows to save all sentient beings, the second of which was the "Wish to Dwell in the South Sea." At that time, the South Sea was plagued by demons and diseases, with a devastated economy and suffering people. Shengyan, the fifth son of the South Sea Dragon King, moved by compassion and endowed with financial wisdom, offered to serve Avalokiteshvara. He transformed into a giant turtle to carry Avalokiteshvara across the vast waves to the South Sea to save the people. Under the protection of the Fifth Dragon Prince, Avalokiteshvara arrived in the South Sea, sprinkled nectar, subdued the demons, and saved the people. Although the demons were defeated, the people remained poor. Thus, the Fifth Dragon Prince vowed to guard the South Sea forever to ensure the prosperity and wealth of the people. Touched by his compassion, Avalokiteshvara transformed him into a giant turtle mountain, known as Mount Ao, now called Nan Mountain. In recognition of his benevolence, the Buddha Shakyamuni bestowed upon him three wealth-attracting treasures: the "Golden Ingots," the "Treasury of Wealth," and the "Jeweled Pot," empowering him to manage the distribution of wealth and oversee the flow of riches in the world.
