About Bhaiṣajyaguru
Bhaiṣajyaguru, also known as the "Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata," is the principal Buddha of the Eastern Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli. He is renowned in Buddhism for representing health, healing, disaster relief, and worldly happiness. With his profound vows, he fulfills the various good wishes of sentient beings and guides them towards ultimate liberation.
Legend
In ancient times, a bodhisattva, deeply compassionate towards the sufferings of all beings, especially diseases, poverty, and disasters, vowed to attain Buddhahood with the utmost wisdom and ability to benefit sentient beings. This bodhisattva made twelve great vows during his practice, each aimed at alleviating the deepest sufferings of sentient beings:
- Wish for his own light to illuminate and awaken sentient beings.
- Wish to use wisdom and skillful means to help sentient beings achieve success.
- Wish to heal the physical and mental illnesses of sentient beings, bringing them health and well-being.
- Wish for sentient beings to have sufficient food and clothing, free from poverty.
- Wish for sentient beings to be free from demonic and external entanglements.
- Wish for sentient beings to be free from the suffering of legal punishment.
- Wish for hungry sentient beings to first receive delicious food and then the flavor of the Dharma.
These twelve great vows cover all aspects of material and spiritual needs, embodying the Mahayana Buddhist spirit of "awakening without leaving the world," which means that ultimate liberation does not separate from the care for worldly happiness.
After countless eons of practice, the bodhisattva's great vows were fulfilled, and he attained supreme enlightenment, becoming a Buddha. Since his core vow was to "remove the suffering of birth and death" and "illuminate the three realms with lapis lazuli light," he was named "Bhaiṣajyaguru," and his Buddha-land was called the "Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli."
Main Features of Bhaiṣajyaguru’s Image
- Body Color: Typically depicted in "lapis lazuli blue," symbolizing his pure and stainless Buddha-land and his vast, clear Dharma body like the void.
- Posture: Often seated in the vajra position, with the left hand holding a medicine bowl (or without) and the right hand holding a myrobalan fruit (or medicine fruit), symbolizing the nectar of healing for all physical and mental illnesses. Sometimes the right hand makes the gesture of granting wishes, indicating the fulfillment of sentient beings' prayers.
- Robes: Wearing the standard robes of a Buddha.
Key Benefits
- Healing and Longevity: The most well-known benefit. When sentient beings are seriously ill, sincerely worshipping Bhaiṣajyaguru and reciting his name or mantra (Om Bhaisajye Bhaisajye Mahabhaisajye Raja Samudgate Svaha) can help eliminate suffering and extend life.
- Disaster Relief: Can eliminate all kinds of disasters, including the nine types of unnatural death, such as illness, legal punishment, demonic possession, fire, drowning, wild animal attacks, falling from cliffs, poison, and curses.
- Fulfillment of Wishes: Can help sentient beings achieve worldly happiness, such as career success, sufficient food and clothing, and harmonious families.
- Ultimate Liberation: The fundamental goal is not just worldly blessings but to guide sentient beings towards enlightenment and ultimate liberation.
