About Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (梵语:क्षितिगर्भ, Kṣitigarbha) is an extremely important bodhisattva in both Han Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism. His name, meaning "Earth Treasury," symbolizes his role in bearing all sentient beings and containing countless methods for their salvation. He is renowned for his great vow, "I will not become a Buddha until all hells are empty," and is revered as the "Great Vow Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva."
Legend
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is often associated with the redemption of beings in hell and filial piety. Classic scriptures record his past causes and conditions:
1. Brahmin Woman Saves Her Mother: In a past life, Ksitigarbha was a Brahmin woman whose mother fell into hell due to disbelief in the Three Jewels. She sold her possessions to support Buddha statues and sincerely recited the Buddha's name, eventually freeing her mother from hell's suffering and vowing to save all suffering beings.
2. Light-Eyed Woman Saves Her Mother: In another life as Light-Eyed Woman, her mother fell into a bad path due to killing and harsh words. She devoutly recited the Buddha's name and made statues, feeling the Buddha's manifestation, informing her that her mother had left the sea of suffering and vowing to widely save beings in future kalpas.
Main Features of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s Image
- Appearance: Typically depicted as a monk or bodhisattva. The monk form, wearing kasaya and shaved head, shows his pure and solemn monastic image, emphasizing that Dharma practice is the root of liberation. The bodhisattva form, with a jeweled crown and celestial garments, is more splendid.

- Mount: A lion-like divine beast named "Diting" or "Shan Ting" sits beneath him. It is said to discern good and evil, listen to the sounds of the universe, assist Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in distinguishing truth from falsehood, and save sentient beings.
Key Benefits
- Redemption of the Underworld: As the lord of the underworld, he can save beings who fall into the three evil paths of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, freeing them from suffering. Therefore, he is often invited to Dharma assemblies, Qingming sacrifices, and other events.
