About Water-moon Guanyin
Water-moon Guanyin, also known as the "Water-Moon Guanyin," is one of the most artistically and philosophically rich representations of Guanyin in Han Chinese Buddhism. The name, not derived from Buddhist scriptures, was created by Chinese artists and named for its unique composition of the moon reflected in water. She is one of the thirty-three manifestations of Guanyin. The Water-moon Guanyin in Fahai Temple is a pinnacle of Ming Dynasty Buddhist art, hailed as "one of the greatest murals in the world" and a national treasure. Located in the Mahavira Hall of Fahai Temple in Shijingshan District, Beijing, it is the centerpiece of the "Three Great Bodhisattvas" mural on the north wall. She is a uniquely Chinese representation of Guanyin, blending Buddhist philosophy, Chinese literati aesthetics, and landscape imagery, serving as a prime example of the Sinicization of Buddhism.
Legend
It is said that the image was first created by the renowned Tang Dynasty painter Zhou Fang. While working in a temple, he integrated the artistic conception of landscape painting to create this image, which became widely popular due to its exquisite nature. The murals of Fahai Temple were overseen by the eunuch Li Tong of Emperor Yingzong's Imperial Supervisory Commission, who gathered dozens of top court painters and craftsmen. It took nearly five years (1439-1444) to complete. Representing the highest level of the Ming Dynasty court painting school, it is known as one of the three great mural treasures of China. After nearly 600 years, the murals inside the hall are still well-preserved, with vibrant colors. The Water-moon Guanyin section, in particular, has clear details and is nothing short of a miracle.
Main Features of Water-moon Guanyin’s Image
- Classic Pose (Meditative Ease): The most typical pose is sitting comfortably on rugged rocks or by the seashore. One leg is naturally lowered, with the foot on a lotus or water surface; the other leg is bent, with the arm resting loosely on the knee. This pose, known as "meditative ease" or "playful sitting," shows Guanyin's freedom and tranquility.
- Background Elements: There is always a tranquil body of water beside or behind her, reflecting a bright moon. A full moon hangs in the sky, complementing the moon's reflection in the water. A few elegant bamboo plants often stand beside her, symbolizing Guanyin's noble character.
- Overall Atmosphere: The entire representation creates a serene, ethereal, and transcendent atmosphere, filled with philosophical contemplation.
Key Benefits
- Spiritual Aspiration of Literati: The ethereal and transcendent nature of Water-moon Guanyin resonates with the aesthetic tastes and spiritual pursuits of ancient Chinese literati, becoming the embodiment of their ideal character.
- Appearance in "Journey to the West": In the famous novel "Journey to the West," Sun Wukong once sought help from Water-moon Guanyin, making this figure even more popular.
- Cultural Significance: Water-moon Guanyin is not only a deity of protection but also a crystallization of Buddhist philosophy, Chinese art, and literati spirit. With its ultimate poetry and profound wisdom, it displays the state of Guanyin's "contemplation of emptiness and freedom," becoming a unique pearl in the world's Buddhist art treasure.
