About Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva
Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva is the right attendant of Amitabha Buddha in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and is also known as the Bodhisattva of Great Progress. Together with Amitabha Buddha and Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, they are collectively known as the "Three Saints of the West." The name Mahasthamaprapta signifies "attaining great power" or "the pervasive wisdom that reaches all directions." He is also the second in line to succeed to the Buddha's position in the Pure Land, representing light and wisdom.
Legend
In ancient times, Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva was the second prince of a wheel-turning king, named Nimo. The king, named Infinite Purity, had a thousand sons. The king arranged for his children to take turns every three months to provide alms to the Buddha and the monastic community, including food, clothing, bedding, and medicine, with Prince Nimo participating as well. Later, the first prince, who became Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva after attaining enlightenment, was followed by Prince Nimo, who studied the Dharma and practiced the bodhisattva path, eventually becoming Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva in the Pure Land. The relics of his parents turned into light, which could transform and manifest Buddha activities to benefit sentient beings. Thus, Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva's vase contains "light," and he is also known as the Bodhisattva of Boundless Light.
